Passion In Prison

There are no words to describe the VIBE…

I spent my birthday/mother’s day weekend in prison.  Yes, I said prison.  Not like what you may be thinking.  It was a privilege to share inspirational space with brave and creative men that took center stage on the subject of transformation titled: “Infinite Possibilities”.

I say brave because they were brave enough to push past the so-called “norm” in the culture of most State prisons on the expectant short lived ignorant lifestyles.  They were brave to express their awareness by investing in themselves with education.

By participating in creative writing program called, “InsideOut Writers” ( they graced us with spoken word of themed poems and personal stories.  Elected officials, activist, actors, educators, musicians, attorneys, teachers all sat sprinkled in between 150 inmates to watch it.

The men I met were very gracious in sharing their journey to Ironwood State Prison, with the understanding that their choices at the time caused other people a lot of pain.

Part of Ironwood’s mission is to provide inmates with life improvement skills needed to successfully re-integrate back into society upon parole.  This also includes Academic Courses; ABE I, II, GED, Independently Study.

Ultimately, I was in a room full of people that genuinely care for other human beings and are putting action to it through their passion. The speakers comprised of community, inmates and Elected officials, including my Hubby Congressman Tony Cardenas, gave examples in story form, of people along their journey that told them, “Don’t try,” “You’re not good enough” or “You have ADD” and “You can’t make it”.

I look forward to what has to be a very moving TEDx video of the year.  Let’s stay connected and keep sharing your highest VIBE!

PeaceVIBE always,

Norma Cardenas, CHt.
